Voronezh Branch of FGUP NIISK is a large applied-research institute operating in synthetic rubber industry. It has a big pilot plant with the annual output of about 2 thousand tons of polymers and chemicals. Currently, the Branch employs about 300 people.
History
The Branch was set up in 1959 in accordance with the Government Regulation to solve scientific and engineering problems of starting commercial production of emulsion and anionic polymerization rubbers and latices, chemicals, and to ensure environment protection.
Researches
Major lines of research activity:
We are the only organization in Russia involved in polymer synthesis by anionic polymerization using organolithium catalysts. The Institute researchers were the first in Russia to develop the process for thermoplastic elastomers (polymers combining rubber and plastic properties), a series of solution styrene-butadiene rubbers, synthetic gutta-percha, and SKD rubber for high impact polystyrene.

The main goal of the Institute researches is to create small-stage low-waste and wasteless, low energy-consuming processes, and hence reduce production costs and chemical products prices.
Production
The pilot plant including 3 major shops, 4 accessory shops and a number of departments is the basis for all kinds of researches and production of unique products used in various applications. This pilot plant allows the Institute to complete researches on its own and introduce them into practice, i.e. directly into production, and provide Russian companies with technical assistance at the stage of technology refining.

Voronezh Branch of NIISK is the only manufacturer of butyllithium in Russia.
Achievements
Over the years of the Institute operation, more than 130 of its researches have been introduced into production. It has obtained over 400 inventor’s certificates and 140 Russian Federation patents. The Institute has sold 25 licenses, three of which - abroad. The institute researches were rewarded 120 diplomas and medals of the USSR Economy Achievements Exhibition, other Russian and International exhibitions and trade fairs.

The Institute has a number of important scientific achievements. Among them – participation in the establishment of the first high-scale styrene production in the USSR, organization of the high-scale production of an up-to-date range of cold-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubbers, production of nitrile-butadiene rubbers using biodegradable emulsifiers, production of nitrile-butadiene rubbers filled with polyvinylchloride, development of processes to make new generation polymers using organolithium catalysts and some specialty rubbers.

An important problem of substituting domestic products for toxic, poorly processible and imported stabilizers has been successfully solved.
Applications
The main applications of polymers being developed and produced are tire and industrial rubber good industries, plastics production and medicine, road building and roofing, production of other consumer goods.
